How to avoid online education scamsOnline learning guideThere are a multitude of websites now offering online education, they promise degrees and some offer free practice papers before you enroll with them but how do you know which are scams and which really work. Here are a few tips to help get you started when looking for honest online education courses: * Make sure that the website and school is accredited by an agency which is acknowledged by the council for higher education accreditation. If this information isn't readily available then do ask before signing up. * If the site or school only asks for a signing up fee for admission then it should be regarded as a scam because you are required to enter information such as test scores and a GPA score. * Be wary if degrees are given solely on your life experiences or career achievements. * Find out if they give out an abundance of degrees to students in the USA yet they operate out of a foreign country. * It's worthwhile checking with the Better business bureau to see if there are any registered complaints against the school. What does accreditation mean? This is an academic stamp of approval which is given to an educational program or institution which at least meets or preferably exceeds the standards in education quality. Any program, school or site that has accreditation you can be sure is of high quality and if you ever want to transfer credits to an accredited school then you are unlikely to get non-accredited coursework recognised. Employers would also frown upon a non-accredited degree. Are all accreditations the same? Not at all, just knowing that your choice for learning is accredited isn't enough, you will need to find out who is conferring the accreditation and if it is one that is recognised. Recognised accreditations come from the Council for higher education accreditation. Accreditations you should know Regional accreditations Most of the degree programs you should be looking for are regional accreditations, this is actually the highest level of accreditation a university can have. There are basically six regional accrediting associations with each being responsible for a particular area, these are: * Middle states association of colleges and schools. * New England association of schools and colleges. * North central association of colleges and schools. * Northwest commission on colleges and universities. * Southern association of colleges and schools. * Western association of colleges and schools. National accreditations While regional accreditations for the most part accredit non profiting degree granting institutions, national organisations mainly accredit for profit, non degree granting single purpose institutions such as information technology or schools which are faith based. There are primarily six national accrediting associations which are: * Accrediting association of bible colleges. * Accrediting commission of distance learning and training council. * Accrediting council for independent colleges and schools. * Association of advanced Rabbinical and Talmudic schools. * Association of Theological schools in the United States and Canada. * Transnational association of Christian schools and colleges accreditation commission. |
